Kāinga Kaumātua
Our kaumātua are an integral part of the fabric of Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei. It’s important to us that they have warm, dry, low maintenance whare to live in with easy access to our marae on the papakāinga.
It was a proud moment for the iwi to come together for karakia and officially open these whare in January 2022.
Project Timeline

- 7 December 2020 – GJ Gardner and Vector on site to begin service relocation and earthworks
- March 2021 – Construction to begin
- December 2021 – Estimated completion date

The Journey
Testing
In July 2019, we announced that planning was underway for additional housing for kaumātua at Atareta Street. The first step was for our contractors to test the soil, ground conditions, groundwater and review the services and utilities such as sewerage, stormwater and electricity, to give us a better understanding of what could be built on the whenua.
Design
We worked closely with our kaumātua through Te Taumata and a working rōpu to inform the design process of 10 brand new whare (5 duplex blocks). Their kōrero has provided real insight into the layout of the whare and our architects at Jasmax took their whakaaro to ensure the whare are fit for purpose and the look and feel is more cohesive with the marae and other kāinga in Ōrākei.
Karakia
With the whenua blessed and G.J. Gardner and Vector preparing to work on-site, the most crucial step in the plan began, the construction of the purpose built whare.
Construction
G.J Gardner were the lead contractors building these whare. They sub-contracted whānau businesses to help with the build and we're pleased to be able to provide opportunities for whānau to work on the whenua to provide homes for our kaumātua.

Whare allocation
A hui was held so that kaumātua and their whānau could come and look at the whare and determine for themselves the fairest way to go about who would be moving in to which whare.

Te Tūāpapa Kura Kāinga – Ministry for Housing and Urban Development is a proud funding partner of Kāinga Kaumātua. They are committed to advancing the housing and urban development outcomes of Māori.
Te Puni Kokiri has generously assisted with funding the infrastructure elements of this project such as services line removals, earthworks, new underground services and roading.
Auckland Council has also provided a grant under its Cultural Initiatives Fund to support hapū and iwi to establish papakāinga housing.
