Quay Park hīkoi whakaaro - Culture

We have put together the feedback from whānau on re-infusing our culture into the whenua, Quay Park, which is a significant part of the Tāmaki CBD and is our single largest commercial asset.

Tuakiritanga / Cultural Identity

Many whānau expressed they would like to see, hear and feel more Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei presence around the place, bringing our culture to life in the surroundings.

He aha ō koutou whakaaro?

Whānau want Quay Park to be a place that is vibrant and bustling, with opportunities to share our culture while also protecting and growing the value of our asset. Our unified voice is important to help shape Te Tōangaroa into a place that feels like our own that we can be proud of.

Some of the feedback whānau shared with us included;

• Create a tourism hub
• Artwork depicting history
• Kahu Pokere – kaitiaki of the precinct
• Re-share stories that Sir Hugh Kahwaru would share
• Performing arts centre
• Outdoor arts events
• Ngāti Whātua is more present in the precinct
• More expressions of pride and manaakitanga
• More historical info shared
• Hear more music in the area
• Waharoa
• Dual naming
• Design in the precinct is more holistic
• Safe spaces to share our culture with each other and others

These ideas will be taken onboard in our plans to re-invigorate the Quay Park area. We want this are to be a place that whānau and visitors from all over Aotearoa and the world can find connection and meaning.
