The intersection of Kepa Road and Kupe Street is being upgraded to support local housing development. Improvements are planned to make it safer for everyone to use.
Kepa Road is a busy route, linking the city centre with Ōrākei and the eastern suburbs. Its intersection with Kupe Street is a gateway into a thriving local neighbourhood. Around Kupe Street intersection is a hub of residential properties, businesses, community centres, sports clubs, Plunket, a school, and an early learning centre.
The local community is growing, with at least 900 new homes planned over the next 20 years. Local home-building is bringing new families into the neighbourhood and more people are using the Kupe Street and Kepa Road intersection as part of their everyday journeys.
In consultation with Auckland Transport, Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei is upgrading the intersection, to make it safer and easier to use.
At busy times, the intersection can be challenging to navigate, particularly for people walking or cycling. It can be difficult for drivers to safely turn out of Kupe Street.
As more families move into the neighbourhood, the intersection will become busier. Installing traffic lights will make everyone safer. The changes will also make local journeys by foot or bike easier, freeing up local roads for those who need to drive.
Construction commenced: Jan 2025
