Keeping whānau safe at home

 

Our whare, our papa kāinga is where we come together, share kai, and make memories with whānau. But even in our safest space, there are things we need to watch out for like the risk of fire, especially in the kitchen. Fires can happen fast, often when we least expect it. By keeping a few simple habits, we can look out for each other and keep everyone safe.

Here are some simple ways to protect our whānau and prevent fires in the kitchen:

Whakapaipai tōu kīhini. Regular cleaning including your stove top and oven can prevent grease and food residue from causing fires.
A clean kitchen is a safe kitchen.

Distractions can turn a delicious meal into a dangerous situation. Whether it's a quick stirfry or a slow-cooked stew, make sure you stay attentive to avoid accidents.

Small items like tea towels and oven mitts can cause big problems if they catch fire. Keep them safe and away from the stove.

Check your smoke alarms!

Smoke alarms can save lives, so make sure yours are correctly installed and working well. Regularly dust them to prevent false alarms from dust buildup.
